Mom woke up yesterday morning in a horrible state of confusion. I had to help her get dressed, she kept asking for my Dad, and Mom remembered I was her daughter but could not recall my name. To make things worse I had the carpet cleaners scheduled to come and that event pushed her over the edge. In short it was a difficult morning that I prayed would end soon.
So what a refreshing and lovely surprise this morning brought me when my Mother greeted me with a smile, humor and a positive attitude so familiar to me. She thanked me for each cup of coffee, complemented my breakfast and dutifully took her pills.
She even remarked that every morning she wakes up her lower back bothers her. Strange that we celebrate remembering she wakes up with pain but it is a memory! When she asked me why I thought that was, I answered that she has degenerative disc disease. Mom asked how that happens and I said “Well Mom you are 80 years old. Unfortunately it is pretty common for our bones to start to fail as we get older.” She remarked “How rude of them!”
